Linde has contracted with Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit) in California to supply the ionic compression hydrogen fueling technology ( earlier post ) and the hydrogen for two new refueling stations, which will be located at AC Transit's Emeryville and Oakland operating divisions.

The awards, funded from the Commission’s Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program, help to pay the difference between a conventional gasoline- or diesel-powered vehicle and one powered by a cleaner alternative fuel. The station development project, known as the Low Carbon Fuel Infrastructure Investment Initiative (LCFI3), has the potential to displace 39 million gallons of petroleum and 187,500 tons of CO 2 emissions per year. Along with the new station build-out, alternative fuel education and community outreach are a piece of LCFI3.

In this pilot project, enough compressed natural gas will be generated to displace 750 to 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel, and to power heavy-duty garbage collection trucks and an on-site generator producing renewable electricity for the facility. This fuel has 88% lower carbon intensity than ultra-low-sulfur diesel.
