Argonne LCA study finds many alternative fuels consume more water than petroleum and natural gas fuels

Green Car Congress

They found that many alternative fuels consume larger quantities of water on a per km basis than traditional petroleum and natural gas pathways. Energy production processes consume water resources and accelerate fluxes of water from land surfaces to the atmosphere. Click to enlarge.

Wood Mackenzie: China thermal coal demand to double to nearly 7btpa by 2030

Green Car Congress

In a new report, energy, mining and minerals consultancy Wood Mackenzie projects that despite efforts to limit coal consumption and seek alternative fuel options, China’s strong appetite for thermal coal will lead to a doubling of demand by 2030. Wood Mackenzie’s report says this will have a limited impact on coal demand.

ArcelorMittal investigates hydrogen-based direct reduction of iron ore for steel production; CDA

Green Car Congress

This year, the Group intends to launch a new project in the ArcelorMittal plant in Hamburg to use hydrogen on an industrial scale for the direct reduction of iron ore (H-DR) in the steel production process for the first time. The process is first tested with grey hydrogen (generated at gas separation) to allow for economical operation.

SRI developing process for co-gasification of methane and coal to produce liquid transportation fuels; negligible water consumption, no CO2

Green Car Congress

Researchers from SRI International (SRI) are developing a methane-and-coal-to-liquids process that consumes negligible amounts of water and does not generate carbon dioxide. If biogas is substituted for conventional natural gas, total GHG emissions can further significantly reduced (190 gCO 2 /mile). Lifecycle GHG comparison.
