Synthetic fuel production from fuel-combustion-based energy and CO 2 (top) and from atmospheric CO 2 using solar electricity (bottom). The showed that using CO 2 from a fossil origin will not provide a carbon-neutral fuel. In a distant future, we foresee possible niches for hydrocarbon fuels produced from CO 2.
