Volvo Cars launched the battery-electric Volvo C40 Recharge; based on the CMA vehicle platform it is the first Volvo model designed as pure electric only. Following the introduction of the XC40 Recharge and now the C40 Recharge, Volvo Cars will roll out several additional electric models in coming years.

The sales growth was led by the company’s Recharge line up of fully electric and plug-in hybrid cars. Sales of Volvo Cars’ Recharge models made up 40% of all Volvo cars sold globally during the month. In February 2022, the share of all-electrics was only 8% (3,338 units out of 42,067).

The fully electric Volvo C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge models have been updated for the 2024 model year to offer increased range ( earlier post ). Range improvements come thanks to two new powertrains offered on both the C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge.

As part of a new package of product updates, Volvo Cars has improved both the range (WLTP) and charging for the all-electric XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge compared with the outgoing model year, increasing range by as much as 60 kilometers on some variants. An updated all-wheel drive variant.

MAHLE Powertrain and Allotrope Energy have unveiled a new battery technology which offers ultra-fast recharging coupled with good power density. The technology features a high-rate battery-type anode and a high-capacity electric double layer capacitor (EDLC)-style cathode, separated by an organic electrolyte.

The Volvo XC40 Recharge, the company’s first fully electric vehicle, will carry an MSRP of $53,990 when it arrives in US showrooms later this year. The purchase of an XC40 Recharge may qualify for a federal tax credit of up to $7,500. The 402 hp all-wheel-drive powertrain features 486 lb-ft (659 N·m) of linear torque.
