The two companies have signed a 5-year (2020 - 2024) supply contract for the lithium needed as a key raw material for battery cells. We aim to have 25 electrified models in our line-up by 2023 and more than half will be fully electric. Sustainability and security of supply are important factors in the expansion of electromobility.

Nissan launched the all-new Note compact car in Japan, with sales planned to begin 23 December. The new Note features the second generation of Nissan’s e-POWER electric powertrain—a series-hybrid drive system in which the only function of the combustion engine is to act as a generator to produce power for the battery.

Recently the BMW Group signed a cobalt supply contract with Moroccan mining company Managem Group ; the contract has a volume of around €100 million, said Andreas Wendt, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Purchasing and Supplier Network. Cobalt is an important raw material for electromobility.

Daimler will buy more than €20 billion (US$23 billion) of battery cells for electric drive vehicles by 2030, the company announced. Daimler currently has battery cell supply deals with SK Innovation, LG Chem and China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL).

More than 1 in 5 cars sold globally this year is expected to be electric, with surging demand projected over the next decade, says a new International Energy Agency (IEA) report. The number of EVs sold globally in Q1 2024 is roughly equivalent to that in all of 2020. In the US, roughly 1 in 9 cars sold are projected to be electric.
