Scout Motors, the recently formed independent company backed by Volkswagen Group ( earlier post , is establishing its first manufacturing plant near Columbia, South Carolina, where it will build electric next-generation trucks and rugged SUVs harkening back to the iconic Scout vehicles produced from 1960 to 1980.

Electric truck maker Rivian has denied a recent report from Germany claiming that the upcoming Rivian R2 may be produced at Volkswagen’s South Carolina plant in the United States. Volkswagen is looking to produce Scout’s all-electric vehicles at the company’s South Carolina plant.

Polestar has announced that its first all-electric SUV, called Polestar 3, is due in 2022 and will be built in the U.S. The company won’t be building a new factory, however; it plans to build the Polestar 3 for U.S. customers alongside Volvo Cars vehicles at Ridgeville, South Carolina.

Volkswagen’s Scout Motors company broke ground on its $2 billion South Carolina assembly plant. Scout Motors’ new assembly is located in Blythewood, South Carolina. Scout Motors estimated its South Carolina plan could generate 4,000 jobs in the area. The $2 billion assembly plant spans 1,600 acres.

Volvo Cars formally inaugurated a new battery assembly line at its Belgian manufacturing plant in Ghent, where it will start building its first fully electric car, the XC40 Recharge P8, later this year. The XC40 Recharge P8 is the first of a family of fully electric Volvos. Volvo XC40 Recharge powertrain.

Scout Motor’s R&D Center in Detroit and its new factory in South Carolina will open simultaneously in 2026. The automaker’s South Carolina facility will produce Scout’s all-electric SUV and pickup truck. Scout will launch an all-electric SUV in the United States market.
