Given equivalent deployment of butanols and ethanol, the results suggest emissions of unburned alcohols would decrease, but carbonyl emissions would increase; some of these compounds have poorly understood health effects, they note. NIOSH considers butyraldehyde to have similar reactivity and mutagenicity to acetaldehyde.
