The Nikkei reports that Suzuki Motor Corp. Suzuki introduced the Swift Plug-in Hybrid at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2009 as a concept ( earlier post ), and gained type approval from the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism in 2010 ( earlier post ). It will also use a gasoline engine to generate electricity.

The partners reckon that mass production will lower the price of biobutanol to about 30-40 yen a liter, about the same as ethanol, making it an affordable alternative to gas and petrochemicals. Suzuki and H. Idemitsu and RITE aim to develop a process for making 300 liters of the fuel from every ton of vegetable matter.
