On 11 August, GM invited approximately 75 journalists and auto analysts to spend a day learning about the new GM. The day was split between a morning session at the GM tech center in Warren and an afternoon session at the GM proving grounds in Milford, MI. According to a meeting agenda and two sources, GM will pump a massive $6.5 On Tuesday, GM is expected to announce the massive investment at an event in Lansing, Michigan. GM also recently received $1.3 billion in an approved tax rebate for the Orion Assembly Plant, where the Chevrolet Bolt EV is made.

In response to the Presidential Auto Task Force Report that concluded that the plug-in Chevrolet Volt was unlikely to be commercially successful in the short-term due to its cost ( earlier post ), Plug In America is proposing a plan to make GM’s Chevy Volt and other plug-in cars more affordable. GM described its approach at the Washington Auto Show. A partial draft checklist of stakeholders and enablers to help guide cities in making their regions plug-in friendly suggested by GM includes: Draft Checklist for a Plug-in Ready City. GM will undertake similar efforts around the country in communities such as Washington, D.C.

Today we covered Tesla's back-and-forth on whether it will or won't build an affordable EV. One of the biggest reasons not to purchase an EV that I hear is that the MSRP of most EVs is too high, even considering tax credits. If it helps, take Tesla out of the equation and think about a $25K EV sold by Ford or GM or Honda or whoever.
