GM China Advanced Technical Center’s Cell Fabrication Lab in Shanghai recently produced its first batch of battery cells. In separate presentations at the 2017 SAE High Efficiency IC Engine Symposium in Detroit, R&D executives from GM and Ford each stressed the importance of improved, advanced fuels—among other technology developments—for their future engine efficiency gains and for long-term CO 2 emissions goals.

On 11 August, GM invited approximately 75 journalists and auto analysts to spend a day learning about the new GM. The day was split between a morning session at the GM tech center in Warren and an afternoon session at the GM proving grounds in Milford, MI. The next-gen Chevy Bolt EV is due out next year after GM ended production of its top-selling electric model at the end of 2023. GM’s CFO Paul Jacobson says the new Bolt EV will save the company billions by becoming North America’s first Ultium-based model to use LFP batteries. We’ve got a really good product that customers love.

The world’s first-to-market electric pickup truck, it turns out, isn’t from Ford, General Motors, or a late-to-market Tesla Cybertruck. That capability begins with four individual electric motors, as I experienced on a stirring R1T test in and around New York. I’m looking forward to my first hardcore off-road runs in the Rivian.
