We mourn the loss of cheap and cheerful pickup trucks. Call them, if you will, hot hatches, but any number of sporty, affordable, fun toys were once available from nearly any dealer. Cheap speed is only a pair of rose-tinted shades away. And we miss inexpensive performance cars.

With government incentives also beginning to wane, affordability remains a major concern for many motorists. A quick search on Auto Trader brings up more than 8,500 results for used BEVs and nearly 7,000 results for used plug-in hybrids, spanning 33 manufacturers and hundreds of models – from hatchbacks and hybrids to coupes and convertibles.

At the time of writing, almost 27,000 used electric cars, including plug-in hybrids, were listed on Auto Trader, representing just under 7% of all used stock. But the facts and forecasts speak for themselves, and – while we cannot afford to be complacent – they point to 2023 being another great year for electric vehicles.

In a pre-response to that speech, having successfully advocated for plug-in hybrids like the forthcoming Chevy Volt, we propose that the President follow that speech up with a “realistic and conservative” roadmap to halve our oil use in 10 years. And oil only seems cheap. Its impacts are increasingly unaffordable.

This isn’t just-for-show suspension like we’ve seen on plenty of cheap e-bikes and e-scooters. I’m definitely an e-bike rider first and foremost, but I spend plenty of time on electric scooters, and so having this hybrid feeling was a really cool way for me to bridge the two camps and get the best of both worlds.
