Just days after Volkswagen said it would go it alone and produce its cheap €20,000 ($A32,500) EV without any help, Renault has announced that it has already found a new Chinese partner to help it create its low-cost Renault Twingo. 1, plus at least two entry-level EVs that are being readied by Hyundai and Kia. Stellantis boss Carlos Tavares has pledged that Jeep’s affordable all-electric SUV will be priced from less than US$25,000 ($A37,500) in the USA – almost US$19,000 less than the cheapest Tesla Model Y. “If you ask me what is an affordable BEV, I would say 20,000 euros in Europe and $25,000 in the US,” Tavares said.

Created to be “affordable to the masses” it’s thought the new EV could be built on a new architecture that will slash costs further than cars based on the VW Group MEB, or the Renault’s CMF-EV architectures. A second VW-branded EV is also in the works that’s it’s thought Renault might co- develop.

In addition, the United States has an under-supply of affordable EVs and cheap batteries for electric vehicles. Meanwhile, China has an oversupply of affordable EVs and cells in the battery market. Even Europe is leaning towards domestically sourcing and supplying battery cells for electric vehicles.

The new VW EVs will adopt the “from Europe for Europe” motto. The four new EVs will lead to Volkswagen’s cheapest electric vehicle, which will cost around €20,000, making it the most affordable BEV under the brand. The Chinese EV could help BYD dominate Europe. VW’s under-€20,000 EV will make its debut in 2027.

6 EV is produced in China by the FAW-VW joint venture and is meant to be sold exclusively in the Chinese car market. The Chinese vehicle registration states that the vehicles Brudny purchased were intended for export and technically adapted to meet the Federal Motor Transport Authority’s requirements. Brudny bought 22 ID.6

Although competitive Chinese automaker BYD isn’t yet slated to enter the U.S. automotive groups have expressed concerns over the Seagull EV and other affordable mass-market EVs eventually coming to North America. at this point, the company has been beginning to deliver its EVs in several markets throughout Europe and Asia.
