A recent study has suggested a new strategy for storing hydrogen, using natural gas as a stabilizer. The research proposed a practical gas phase modulator based synthesis of a hydrogen-natural gas blend (HNGB) without generating chemical waste after dissociation for the immediate service. 2019.06.007.

The remaining carbon dioxide is stored in the tank and reused in onshore methanol production. In 2019 alone, emissions reached 144 million tonnes of CO 2. The methanol is mixed with water, then evaporated by applying heat and fed into the preheated reactor, where the mix of methanol and water is converted into hydrogen and CO 2.

Because so much energy is lost turning steam back into water in the Rankine cycle, at most a third of the power in the steam can be converted into electricity. The compressor gets the supercritical CO 2 up to the necessary pressure before it meets up with waste heat in the recuperator and returns to the heater to continue the cycle.
