Sandia team puts power into local grid with supercritical CO2 closed-loop Brayton-cycle turbine

Green Car Congress

Sandia National Laboratories researchers recently delivered electricity produced by a new power-generating system to the Sandia-Kirtland Air Force Base electrical grid. It took us a long time to get the data needed to let us connect to the grid. In comparison, the Brayton cycle has a theoretical conversion efficiency upwards of 50%.

Thermal Energy Storage Is No Longer Just Hot Air

Cars That Think

The company is building these shipping container systems, which work like giant batteries that store energy as heat and pressurized air , rather than a chemical reaction (Cheesecake’s name is derived from a nerdy acronym for their technology.) The compressed air, now cool and easier to store, is housed in a large air tank.

Mercedes-Benz Cars plants in Germany to be supplied with CO2-neutral energy from 2022

Green Car Congress

The plant will start operating in 2019. The production hall uses renewable energy and reduces water consumption and waste significantly. In order to achieve the goals for energy efficiency, energy flexibility and grid stability, the opportunities arising from the digitization of energy networks must be consistently exploited.

11 Intriguing Engineering Milestones to Look for in 2023

Cars That Think

The world’s largest pumped-energy-storage station—a technique that stores energy by pumping it uphill to a reservoir—is set to complete phase two of its construction in 2023. The competition kicked off in 2019, and XPrize’s net investment is US $10 million. Laptops will have to follow sometime in 2026. Several U.S.

A critical issue in decarbonization will also be the role of the electrical grid itself. We need off-grid and on-grid solutions. In the last two decades of the 20th century, we identified thousands of toxic waste dumps and worked to ensure that people were not in the pathways of exposure to poison.

Is Europe’s Nuclear Phaseout Starting to Phase Out?

Cars That Think

Scientists from the EU Joint Research Centre agreed, reporting that nuclear power doesn’t cause undue environmental harm, despite the need to store nuclear waste. After all, in sharp contrast to those two, the average price of nuclear electricity has actually nudged upwards by 26 percent between 2010 and 2019.
