The report is the authoritative reference for real-world fuel economy, technology trends and tailpipe carbon dioxide emissions, for new personal vehicles sold in the US every year since 1975. Model year (MY) 2016 vehicle fuel economy was 24.7 mpg, or 28%, with an average annual improvement of about 0.5 mpg per year.

EPA released the latest edition of its annual report on trends in CO 2 emissions, fuel economy and powertrain technology for new personal vehicles in the US. mpg increase over the previous year and an increase of nearly 5 mpg since 2004. Since 1975, half of car production has consistently been within several mpg of each other.

Consumer demand for trucks and SUVs continues to rise in Los Angeles and across the country, but sales of the Ford Fusion Hybrid and Ford Fusion Energi plug-in are moving ahead. The Fusion Hybrid sold 2,542 units in June 2016, up 50% from 1,691 units in June 2015. Both of these numbers are retail sales and do not include fleet sales.
