Cuomo announced that the state has seen a 74% increase in electric car sales over the same time period last year, resulting from the Drive Clean Rebate initiative launched on 21 March 2017. The Drive Clean Rebate provides New York residents with a rebate of up to $2,000 for the purchase of a new plug-in car from participating dealers.

As a result of this initiative, more than 10,000 electric cars were sold in 2017, a 67% increase over 2016. Overall, most consumers received rebates of at least $1,100 for their new electric cars.
