The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards require that vehicles offered for sale in the US attain an average fuel economy of 40.3 Beginning in 2016, NHTSA and EPA will coordinate a mid-term review that must be finalized by April 2018. to 41 mpg by 2021 and 48.7 mpg by 2025. only the MY 2017-2021 CAFE standards are final.

Consulting firm KPMG , for example, estimates that in addition to the 179 new battery EV model launches and refreshes between 2016 and 2020, at least another 251 are expected between 2021 and 2023 by traditional auto manufacturers, or original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) as they are referred to in the industry, as well as start-ups.
