Swedish automaker Volvo has rolled out its last diesel-powered vehicle, after a 45-year relationship with the powertrain and cranking out millions of diesel cars. Between 2012 and 2016, diesel accounted for half of the company’s global sales. Since 1991, Volvo made more than 9 million vehicles with diesel engines.

Volvo Bus’ plug-in hybrid. Field tests being conducted in Gothenburg show that Volvo Buses’ plug-in hybrid reduces fuel consumption by 81% and total energy consumption (diesel plus electricity) by 61% compared to a comparable Euro 5 diesel bus. That’s 81% less fuel than the equivalent diesel bus consumes.

The additional 14,000 tonnes of NO x would make it twice the size of the Volkswagen “Dieselgate” scandal of 2015, noted environmental NGO T&E. The key NO x reduction technology for trucks is Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), which requires the controlled dosing of a diesel exhaust fluid called AdBlue to enable effective NO x reduction.
