Researchers in Australia develop low-cost water-splitting catalyst that offers comparable performance to platinum

Green Car Congress

Iron and nickel, which are found in abundance on Earth, would replace precious metals ruthenium, platinum and iridium that up until now are regarded as benchmark catalysts in the water-splitting process. —Suryanto et al. —Prof Zhao. Iron and nickel are currently priced at $0.13 and $19.65 a kilogram. and $69.58 Suryanto et al.

NREL shows graded catalytic-protective layer boosts longevity of high-efficiency photocathodes for renewable hydrogen

Green Car Congress

Researchers at the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have developed a method which boosts the longevity of high-efficiency photocathodes in photoelectrochemical water-splitting devices. A PEC cell absorbs sunlight and converts that energy into hydrogen and oxygen by splitting water molecules.

Stanford team develops new low-voltage single-catalyst water splitter for hydrogen production

Green Car Congress

Researchers at Stanford University have developed a new low-voltage, single-catalyst water splitter that continuously generates hydrogen and oxygen. In the reported study, the new catalyst achieved 10 mA cm −2 water-splitting current at only 1.51 V V to reach 10 mA cm −2 current (for integrated solar water splitting).
