The Government of Canada is moving forward with provincial and territorial partners, industry and stakeholders, to develop a national strategy to increase the number of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVS)—battery electric, plug-in hybrid, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles—on Canadian roads by 2018.

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) has received a five-year, $25-million contract from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to provide testing and analytical services related to vehicle emissions and fuel efficiency. In 2015, SwRI won a similar five-year, $20-million contract. The scope of this contract is quite broad.

The Environment Committee of the European Parliament voted to include CO 2 emissions from the maritime sector in the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS). The California Air Resources Board (CARB) announced that greenhouse gas emissions in California in 2016 fell below 1990 levels for the first time since emissions peaked in 2004—a reduction roughly equivalent to taking 12 million cars off the road or saving 6 billion gallons of gasoline a year.

Initial findings from a world-first study of the impact of 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) on both engines of a commercial jet have provided promising early results, according to the participants. In-flight emissions tests and associated ground testing on the ECLIF3 program began earlier this year and have recently resumed.

An analysis by JATO Dynamics has found that average new vehicle CO 2 emissions in European increased in 2018, with the total average increasing by 2.4 The analysis covered 23 markets in Europe and found a direct correlation between diesel car registrations and average CO2 emissions. g/km in 2015 to -1.4 g/km to 120.5

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) recently opened a new high-horsepower engine dynamometer facility to improve its engine research and evaluation services to industries that use engines up to 7,000 horsepower for applications in transportation, pipelines and power generation. The new facility features two 7,000 hp test cells.
