Researchers at Berkeley Lab, led by Dr. Heinz Frei of the Physical Biosciences Division, reported the first direct temporally resolved observations of intermediate steps in water oxidation using the Earth-abundant catalyst cobalt oxide (Co 3 O 4 ). The oxidation of water to molecular oxygen is a four-electron process involving multiple steps.
