At the opening of Auto Guangzhou 2012, Shanghai General Motors launched its first localized new energy vehicle, the Sail SPRINGO EV. Fisker Automotive published its first business update, announcing that revenues had exceeded $100 million in the first four months of 2012. In the first few months of 2012, Fisker has continued to raise private equity investment to fund its expansion plans, securing $174 million of additional private financing since the start of the year.

Featuring a GM-developed 105 kW electric motor that pushes out 400 lb-ft (542 N·m) of torque and a 21 kWh pack that supports an estimated 82-mile (132 km) range, the Spark EV is a speedy (0-60 mph in 7.6 Much of this derives from the efforts GM has put over the years into motor control and active damping for hybrids and EVs.

The Roewe 550, a plug-in strong hybrid car offering a 50% boost in fuel economy, will enter the market in quantities in 2012. Volvo says it will build about 250 cars by the end of 2012, possibly more if market interest takes off. The Volvo C30 Electric is built on the regular assembly line in the Ghent factory and then transported to Göteborg for installation of the motor, batteries and other model-specific electronics. A full recharge takes about 7 hours.

A vehicle equipped with standard transmission will even shut off its engine when rolling at speeds below 20 km/h (12 mph). The module needed to get the engine to idling speed quickly so as to make vibrations and engine noises practically unnoticeable in 400 milliseconds—twice as fast as a normal starter motor.
