GM sold more than half a million diesel-powered cars across Europe, Asia, Africa and South America last year, including 33,000 Cruzes. A team from Instituto Motori in Italy has analyzed the spray behaviors of first-generation (soybean- and rapeseed-biodiesel) and second-generation (gas-to-liquids) biofuels in a diesel engine, both neat (100%) and in a 50% blend with commercial diesel. Diesel vehicles posted their lowest market share since 2001, as demand fell by double digits in 20 of the 27 markets included in JATO’s analysis, with the biggest drops in the UK (-30%), Scandinavia (-22%) and Benelux (-22%).
