A number of startups showed off their porposals to retrofit the existing fleets of petroleum-fueled vehicles, giving some hope to Andy Grove’s ambitoious desire to create millions of plug-in conversions before the automakers deliver. But neither car, GM execs made clear, will appear for sale on a showroom floor for more that two years.

For years now, inventors and sellers of electric car conversion kits have been blasting traditional automakers for not providing the 100 m.p.g. Now, of course, Bright Automotive is ready to unveil the IDEA, with the expectation it will have 50,000 ready for sale in 2013. The 100 m.p.g. Yes, still a few years away. Yep, a truck.

Several after-market companies have done PHEV conversions of the Ford Escape hybrid and one has done a retrofit of the F-150 pickup -- see Where PHEVs Are and ICE-Conversions.) Shifted earlier focus to all-electric Focus in 2011 with Magna. Hybrid Sonata model year 2011, possible PHEV version in 2013. No announced plans.
