Study shows significant reductions in real-world heavy-duty diesel emissions from 2010 regulations

Green Car Congress

New research from North Carolina State University found that federal requirements governing diesel engines of MY 2010 tractor trailer trucks have resulted in major cuts in real world emissions of particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NO x ). A 2010 truck emitted 2 grams of NO x per gallon of fuel—a decrease of 98%.

ORNL Researchers Find Thermochemical Exhaust Heat Recuperation In Internal Combustion Engines Could Provide Substantial Boosts in Second-Law Efficiency

Green Car Congress

When reforming is not used, the fuel and exhaust pass through CV2 unchanged. The basic concept of TCR involves using exhaust heat to promote on-board reforming of hydrocarbon fuels into syngas (a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen). Conklin (2010). The lower inner control volume (CV2) contains the reformer and intercooler.

Study finds gasoline exhaust contributes more to formation of secondary organic aerosols than diesel

Green Car Congress

Contrary to expectations, exhaust from gasoline vehicles contributes more to the production of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) than exhaust from diesel vehicles, according to a new study by scientists from the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), NOAA’s Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) and other colleagues.

Study finds high exhaust temperatures within NTE operation for heavy-duty diesels with aftertreatment systems contribute to high nanoparticle concentrations

Green Car Congress

The transient results illustrate the gradual formation of the nucleation mode particles with continuous increase in exhaust temperatures. Current 2010 USEPA emissions standards for NO x and PM are set at 0.20 However, higher exhaust temperatures resulted in total particle number concentration that were orders of magnitude higher.
