The average fuel economy of new light duty vehicles bought in the USA leapt from October 2007 to April 2009 from 20.2mpg to 21.3mpg. According to Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute, both the unemployment rate and the cost of petrol influenced buyers’ decisions with regards to the fuel economy of their vehicles.

At the 2009 SEMA Show, Toyota Motor Sales USA partnered with the Surfrider Foundation to create a specially modified Camry Hybrid fuelled by compressed natural gas (CNG). The CNG system was built by Metal Crafters of Fountain Valley, California and sees the petrol fuel system replaced with a CNG system in the spare tyre well.

Honda Manufacturing in Indiana has begun production of the 2009 Civic GX, which is the only natural gas vehicle built by a major automaker in the USA. It has been certified as an Inherently Low Emissions Vehicle by the EPA and is the only natural gas powered car available in all 50 states.
