UPS plans to build an additional five compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling stations and add more than 700 new CNG vehicles including 400 semi-tractors and 330 terminal trucks. UPS will have invested more than $1 billion in alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles and fueling stations from 2008 through 2018.

While alternative powertrains still represent a small percentage of market share compared to gasoline engines, the report noted, clean diesels saw a 10% increase in 2014 sales over 2013 sales, while hybrids saw a 10% decrease, pure electrics saw a 20% increase and compressed natural gas saw a 33% decrease. The extracted rock can be used directly as a power plant resource or it can be processed to produce shale oil, which in turn can be refined into gasoline, diesel or jet fuels. Just over 85% of mined oil shale was used to produce electricity and heat generation; the rest was turned into shale oil, retort gas and other valuable chemicals.
