The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has updated rules making it easier for manufacturers to sell fuel conversion systems—i.e., systems that alter a conventionally-fueled vehicle or engine to enable it to run on an alternative fuel. This initiative follows a 2008 incentive program that put into service more than 2,200 trucks that currently meet or exceed 2007 US EPA emission standards. Since the launch of the Clean Truck Program on 1 October 2008, pollution at the Los Angeles-Long Beach port complex has been reduced by more than 23%, according to the Commission.

It is calling for a 40 percent reduction in shipping’s carbon emissions from 2008 levels by 2030. All that notwithstanding, Prousalidis says he believes these technical hurdles will someday be solved, and engines running on alternative fuels will replace their diesel-fueled counterparts eventually.
