The UK government has today released figures of regional CO2 emission results with emissions falling in 335 out of 434 local authorities across the country. Today’s results show that total CO2 emissions have dropped by 2% between 2005 and 2007, with emission levels now reduced by 21% in comparison to 1990 levels.

Japanese car manufacturer Nissan continues to make progress on its Nissan Green Program 2010 mid-term environmental plan and has now announced an update in its status - along with the announcement of a clean-diesel engine for the Japanese market. The standards, which will apply to model years 2012-2016, will require an average fuel economy standard of 35.5mpg in 2016 (39mpg for cars, 30mpg for trucks) - approximately 250 grams CO2/mile. This speeds up the initial CAFE programme target set by the EISA 2007 which specified a minimum of 35mpg by 2020.

The average fuel economy of new light duty vehicles bought in the USA leapt from October 2007 to April 2009 from 20.2mpg to 21.3mpg. In a companion study for the same period, it was also found that the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per driver from these new vehicles were lower in each month compared to October 2007.
