In 1975, General Ernesto Geisel, then-president of Brazil, ordered the country’s gasoline supply mixed with 10% ethanol. The level was raised to 25% over the next five years, which was intended to maintain a constant Brazilian gasoline supply for an ever-increasing demand. These were arguably the first flex-fuel vehicles.

In the prototype of a BMW 2 Series Active Tourer with plug-in hybrid system, the front wheels are driven by a three-cylinder gasoline engine and the rear wheels by an electric motor. The stored energy can then be used for all-electric driving at a later stage in the journey, for example when driving through an urban area.

The Q7 PHEV will arrive in dealerships in Germany in 2016, and will likely come to the US, although perhaps with a gasoline-engine variant. While they store a high amount of energy compared to the other designs, their power output is comparatively low. The tanks can store around five kilograms (11.0 US gal) of gasoline.

Dont PHEVs just shift pollution from gasoline cars to power plants? Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) is the concept of using stored energy in a plug-in hybrids (or electric cars) battery to send power to the electrical grid when necessary. The enthusiasm for ethanol ("flex-fuel" cars use E85, which is 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline) is welcome.
