EV Costs—What a Difference a Day Makes I wrote only three days ago about a study of EV costs that ranked all 50 states by the five-year cost of owning and operating an electric car. The numbers had a hiccup this month as the state decided to reverse a sales tax exemption for EVs that had been around for decades.

A team of researchers from Carnegie Mellon University has analyzed the impact of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) battery pack size on fuel consumption, cost and greenhouse gas emissions over a range of charging frequencies (distance traveled between charges). Larger battery packs allow drivers to go longer distances on electric power.

In 1975, General Ernesto Geisel, then-president of Brazil, ordered the country’s gasoline supply mixed with 10% ethanol. The level was raised to 25% over the next five years, which was intended to maintain a constant Brazilian gasoline supply for an ever-increasing demand.

Mercedes-Benz presented the new B-Class F-CELL, its first (limited) series production fuel-cell powered electric vehicle available in the US ( earlier post ), at the Los Angeles Auto Show. tax over a term of 24 months and includes the cost of hydrogen fuel. A typical full-service monthly lease rate will be $849 excl.

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) estimates that the current power grid could handle many tens of millions of cars plugging in at off-peak hours before wed have any capacity issues [See EPRI article PDF ].

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010. Several dozen prototypes on 15-passenger van since 2004; now in second generation development; no production plans. todays answer is "Yes -- but not yet."
