mpg increase over the previous year and an increase of nearly 5 mpg since 2004. Fuel economy has now increased in eight of the last nine years; average carbon dioxide emissions are also at a record low of 369 g/mile in model year 2013. The detailed data supporting the report were obtained directly from automobile manufacturers.

ORVR systems are carbon canisters installed in vehicles to capture gasoline vapors evacuated from the gasoline tank before they reach the pump nozzle. Gasoline-rich vapors in an empty automobile fuel tank are forced out when liquid gasoline is pumped into the tank. Stage II Vapor Recovery Systems Issues Paper (EPA, 2004).
