The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is now accepting applications through the state’s $6 million Alternative Fuel Incentive Grant program (AFIG) for fuel or fuel-saving projects throughout the state. Projects must begin on or after July 1, 2010, and must be completed within two years.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has updated rules making it easier for manufacturers to sell fuel conversion systems—i.e., systems that alter a conventionally-fueled vehicle or engine to enable it to run on an alternative fuel. Sunoco purchased the Eagle Point Refinery in January 2004 from El Paso Corporation. The company intends to idle Eagle Point until market conditions improve and will evaluate this decision and other options on an ongoing basis, including the feasibility of using the facility to produce alternative fuels in the future.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) announced that greenhouse gas emissions in California in 2016 fell below 1990 levels for the first time since emissions peaked in 2004—a reduction roughly equivalent to taking 12 million cars off the road or saving 6 billion gallons of gasoline a year.

Overall, FedEx currently operates 274 hybrid electric and electric vehicles around the globe, and 1,780 alternative fuel vehicles and equipment. The addition of these 51 vehicles takes FedEx to a total of 325 hybrid electric and electric vehicles, and more than 1,800 alternative fuel vehicles and equipment.
