A team of British and Australian scientists has discovered an important method of how carbon is drawn down from the surface of the Southern Ocean to the deep waters beneath. The Southern Ocean is an important carbon sink in the world—around 40% of the annual global CO 2 emissions absorbed by the world’s oceans enter through this region.

When combined with other sources of zero-carbon energy such as large hydroelectric generation and nuclear, nearly 59% of the state’s retail electricity sales came from nonfossil fuel sources. The program was established in 2002 with an initial requirement that 20% of electricity retail sales be served by renewable resources by 2017.

US subsidies for fuels and renewable energy, 2002-2008. The study, “Estimating US Government Subsidies to Energy Sources: 2002-2008”, found that fossil fuels benefited from approximately $72 billion over the seven-year period, while subsidies for renewable fuels totaled $29 billion. Nuclear was not included in the analysis.

A team of researchers from the US and India has found that airborne black carbon aerosols, or soot, from India is a major contributor to the decline in snow and ice cover on the glaciers in the Himalayan mountains. Black carbon alone contributes at least 30% of this sum. Change in annual linear snow cover from 1990 to 2001.
