The paper was presented by authors Ed Tate and Peter Savagian at last month’s SAE 2009 World Congress in Detroit. Charge-sustaining fuel economy for all vehicles is assumed to be 36 miles per US gallon. There are no speed or power constraints that force the engine to run; fuel is burned only after the battery pack is depleted.
