For the 1980s, GM created the X-Cars , Ford offered Fox sedans and American Motors had the Concord. The air conditioning was $757 ($2,121 today), but at least the AM/FM stereo radio was standard equipment in the Aries LE and SE. It was (sometimes) hard to believe that this was a four-cylinder compact with front-wheel-drive.

Ford, Hyundai, Kia, and GM will all launch vehicles into that segment over the next couple of years. market only in a long-wheelbase version, VW of America having decided the standard European model was just too small.
